Music Lives 365 December 31 Odetta & Charlie Musselwhite & Orville Red Rhodes (Dec 30)

No one can dub you with dignity. That’s yours to claim.
— Odetta
Sometimes the spirit is playing you. I call it following the will of the music, and when that feeling shows up, you just go with it. It’s almost like I’m a bystander. I’m watching this happening, and it’s not a mental process. It’s just spontaneous.
— Charlie Musselwhite

This yes, obscure record made in 1973 by pedal steel master Red Rhodes is an all time favorite. Beautiful in its musical breadth, the distinctive use of an instrument, usually associated only with country stylings, takes vast creative leaps. He spent the bulk of his career as a pivotal force in Michael Nesmith’s spectacular First National Band. They were in fact born on the same day, December 30th. A velvet hammer and his dog resting comfortably at his feet in the workshop. The visionary sound meticulist Red Rhodes. Love this record.
