Music Lives 365: November 28 William Blake & Randy Newman

Two covers of Mr. Blake, the painter, poet visionary. Above, his work, “The Ancient of Days.” I don’t think he was a swashbuckling bible thumper from the 1700’s. People are still touched by his magnanimous mind today. He seems to have made a mad dash for personal improvement and won.

In the universe, there are things that are known, and things that are unknown, and in between, there are doors.
— William Blake
I think in most cases, unless you’re writing about a character who is garrulous, you say what you’ve got to say and then get out. Those little conjunctions, those little turnaround words help you do it. That’s the way I like to write: I get rid of things rather than add them.”
— Randy Newman
He who desires and acts not, breeds pestilence
— William Blake

Mr. Gordy has had quite a fairy tale life, equal parts automobile worker, songwriter, talent scout, entrepreneur, music magnate. He started Motown records in 1957 with $800 bucks. The rest is history: a veritable who’s who of popular music in the 1960s and early 70’s: Jackie Wilson, the Miracles, the Supremes, the Temptations, Stevie Wonder and so on. Scary. And don’t forget this record

What is now proven was once only imagined
— William Blake
