Music Lives 365: December 20 Michael Hurley

Michael Is a serious record hound. His work is filled with warhorse chestnuts from American folk, rock, country, r&b, gospel and jazz. Here are two examples: J. R. Cheatham’s “Blue Lonesome Highway,” and Bill Brownings, “Dark Valley Walls.” Michael embues them with his unique lo-fi, weary fried, not- in -a -hurried-ness.

Somewhere back in time I went to hear Michael at a club in Lowell, MA. He did this mesmerizing song. At the break I went up to ask him about it. He kindly hand wrote the lyrics for me on the spot.

Extensive profile of Michael’s career by music journalist Byron Coley that appeared in Arthur magazine no. 35 August 2013

Michael is famous for the paintings on all his lp covers, adorning them with unique characters like the wolves Boone and Jocko, and the personality filled music notes above.
