Music Lives 365: August 6 Abbey Lincoln

I think that’s what really a substantial work is, it’s forever. It’s the truth now and it was the truth then, and it will be the truth tomorrow.
— Abbey Lincoln

Ms. Lincoln’s simple, powerful, delicate, solitary rendering of the Maxwell Andersen (lyrics), Kurt Weill (music)

piece composed in 1949.

A beauty from down under the limelight: the late Philadelphia based multi-instrumentalist, Byard Lancaster

I sure am sad this guy is gone. He packed a quiet wallop. Had a dour magnificence. To me the musicians who address the foibles that lie barely beneath our recognition are enormous gifts. Elliot Smith slathered us with songs from the underbellies of our relationships. Complexly simple works. I bet the crying at his funeral some years ago hasn’t stopped yet.

This song appears at the end of the film “Good Will Hunting.” Quite often that indicates the song is touched by a magic message somehow offering resolution to the plot. You could go back and watch it to see what you think.

“You can’t get better at things you never play.”
— Elliot Smith

Mr. Haden in 1981

If you strive to become a good human being with the qualities of generosity, humility and having reverence for life...just maybe you’ll become a great musician.
— Charlie Haden
