ML365: December 1 Janelle Monae & Jaco Pastorius

I have not listened to Mr. Pastorius exhaustively but I have never exhausted my admiration for his work with Ms. Mitchell and in particular this piece. He dives to places I have never heard the electric bass go: massive empathy for something, about something, solace, maybe from the violently confusing life he apparently led, sustained reverberating beauty.

John Densmore

Though Mr. Densmore’s drumming could easily go unnoticed given the prowess of the Doors other members, the poignant and quiet assurance he delivers in this piece is unmistakable. Like other remarkable percussionists he supports and widens the sonic possibilities of the players. His graceful touches are barely audible. But if we lean in and pay attention the delicate melancholy prevails.
