I have been salivating for July 31 to arrive as it is the nativity of the underappreciated pianist Hank Jones. Though not a “household name” his works are things of penetrating beauty and gripping ease. Out of his truly vast recording career, I’m directing you toward two gospel evocations he recorded with the bassist Charlie Haden:
“Steal Away,” from 1999 and “Come Sunday,” recorded in 2010. This music can get your spirit genuflecting.
