Daniel Gonora is a Zimbabwean guitarist and singer who is backed by his teenage son Isaac on drums, along with other Zimbabwean musicians. The musical style is known as Sungura, characterized by steady, joyful electric guitar and call/response harmony vocals. As a Peace Corps volunteer in neighboring Malawi in the mid- 1980’s, I heard raw versions of Sungura in rural areas, played on homemade guitars and drums of scrap metal. It was magical. Dust to Digital has just released a new album of Gonora Sounds called Hard Times Never Kill.
