The Bop Shop 3.17.24 -Peter Bruntnell-

peter bruntnell “ perfume river”

from: ghost in a spitfire, 2005

Mr. Bruntnell is another to step from the “best kept secrets department” having persisted in his craft on the other side of the pond since the mid nineties. His tastefully soulful poetic rock arrangements and moody vocals occur pleasingly throughout his catalogue. And yes “Perfume River” builds and sustains a mystic, crystal groove that glides and coolly carries a country punk tension. During 2023, he toured the West Coast with the band Son Volt celebrating their first record “Trace” and their recent tribute to the late great Doug Sahm the poster for which can be viewed below.

Down here on the lunar wind, the sugar stars are flickering
And the smoke rules from the southland
From the fragrant shores and the silver sands
And it rains down, on account of nothing, don’t count on nothing

Don’t know why I wanna stay
But the whirlwind won’t turn away
And I don’t know why I wanna hurt
And wanna feel the years I don’t deserve
And they lean down, on account of nothing, don’t count on nothing

You sold the car and jumped the fence to the wrong side of indifference
Where the water’s cool but it brings no rest
And it strikes out time under house arrest
That burns down, on account of nothing, don’t count on nothing
