The Bop Shop 4.27.23 - Link Wray

Rockabilly guitarist Link Wray’s backyard chicken shack recording studio 1970

Here’s two selections from one of the truly direct hits from beneath the veil of American musical obscurity. It’s Link Wray from 1971. Relegated to a chicken shack in the back yard of his Virginia home because his wife was annoyed by the racket they were making, Link connected the dots of country soul gospel most convincingly. Just listen to Mr. Wray’s guitar fills which populate most every inch of this little beauty, “Take Me Home Jesus.” “Ice People” is simply one of the best laments ever cut. It pinpoints some deep disappointments so soulfully. If the piano line sounds familiar, I think it may have been lifted from the Dionne Warwick/Burt Bacharach classic “Walk on By.” This record puts the “G” in genuwine!
