Abbey Lincoln was a fierce musical force, often tender but strident. Her singular style incorporated screams and wailing in difficult portraits from black history during a time when these stories were seldom told. Her humanity and willingness to impart the emotionality of her songs shines through in this one. The lyrics are those of poet Paul Lawrence Dunbar.
