norma waterson, “norwegian wood,”
from: rubber folk, 2012
I would be remiss without acknowledging an obscure but stalwart tribute to the Beatles Rubber Soul, by a coterie of Celtic artists. A highlight features the prowess of the late Norma Waterson. On more careful listening I wonder whether the choral group was created by multi-tracking her voice and that of her husband Martin Carthy. Either way, her intonation rises and falls accompanied by the chamber -pot -folk orchestra which breathes another life into this tome. The world needed a natural, emotionally powerful stabilizing chanteuse, and gave us Ms. Waterson. The other artists are listed below
