The Bop Shop 6.20.23 - John Zorn

John Zorn-Bar Kokhba, “Kisofim”

from: You tube, Warsaw 1999

The prolific composer and saxophonist (John Zorn) has spent decades working with a set of ideas about Jewish music and a rotating cast of musicians creating the Masada.

Here is one of the hundreds of his compositions, played by his Bar Kokhba Sextet.  Marc Ribot takes front stage on this one, with Cyro Baptista on percussion, Greg Cohen on bass, Joey Baron on drums, Mark Feldman on violin and Erik Friedlander on cello.  Zorn is conducting.

How to describe this unearthly sound? Per Tzadik, John Zorn's music label, it's sephardic exotica for young moderns.  Observe the joy and intensity of the musicians as they ascend.
