Dirk Powell

dirk powell, “sweet goes the whistle”

from: walking through clay 2014

Mr. Powell ‘s voicings have created a monumental cajun based lament. I’m unsure to whom or what it is directed but it is my guess that it’s the journey of our mortal coil. The warp and weft of our freedom. Those are the two basic components used in weaving to turn yarn into fabric. Perhaps an apt metaphor. Plus he sings natural as a door opens. Anyway, it’s pace and tone could elevate it to a small-scale national anthem or just a prayer for fallen angels. In traditional music circles, since Dirk broke onto the scene, bursting with savant instrumental chops on the banjo, fiddle, electric guitar and accordion, everything he touches turns to gold. He nails this one to the cross.
