Mr. Powell is a wunderkind of “Americana.” Growing up in Ohio his musical education was supercharged by a burgeoning relationship during his teenage years with his musical grandfather. He was reunited with connections to the Kentucky Appalachian heritage and became proficient on fiddle, banjo and guitar. Eventually got married to the Cajun great Dewey Balfa’s daughter Christine which continued to festoon contacts with the wild seeds of American acoustics. His approaches are always fresh and his voice is a quiet and immediate transformer of the songs he inhabits. “Let the Night Seize Me” absorbs Irish instrumental balladry and an effortless mysticism.
