the national, “crumble”

from: Laugh track, 2023

If you say that it’s true
But you don’t know what to do
And it’s only because you love me
If you tell me that you’re sure
And it can’t wait anymore
And it’s only because you love me
I... I’m gonna crumble
I... I’m gonna crumble
If you say it like that I’Il die
If you say it like that l’Il probably cry
If you say it like that and don’t want to take it back
I’m gonna crumble
You say don’t misread your words
Sometimes they’re gonna hurt
And it’s only because you love me
If you say you’re well aware
Of that but you don’t care
And it’s only because you love me
I... I’m gonna crumble
I... I’m gonna crumble
If you say it like that I’II die
If you say it like that l’Il probably cry
If you say it like that and don’t want to take it back
I’m gonna crumble
Get yourself ready to catch what you can of me
Get yourself ready to pick me up
Get yourself ready to catch what you can of me
Get yourself ready to pick me up
If you say it without intention
You just thought that you should mention
And it’s only because you love me
And you want to see me soon
Under less a children’s moon
And it’s only because you love me
I... I’m gonna crumble
L... I’m gonna crumble
If you say it like that l’Il die
If you say it like that I’Il probably cry
If you say it like that and don’t want to take it back
I’m gonna crumble
Get yourself ready to catch what you can of me
Get yourself ready to pick me up
Get yourself ready to catch what you can of me
Get yourself ready to pick me up
— Matthew Beringer

Painting of Mr. Beringer by the British figurative artist Joe Simpson

Here’s a favorite from just last year. It was released modestly and played almost nowhere. I like its fragility and vulnerability. He discussed personal risk with such a beautifully conversational tone as if speaking with an old frtiend. Mr. Berenger is joined by the accomplished vocalist, Roseanne Cash. Aaron Dessener delivers the guitar pangs.
