ann peebles, “crazy about you baby”

from: this is ann peebles, 1969

I can’t sleep at night
I can’t not prove a thing
I can’t hold on no longer, baby
Living this a way
You know I’m crazy about you, baby
And I wonder do you ever think of me?
Mmm
You know I’m wild about you, baby
But you don’t care a nothin’ in this world for me
Oh, no
It ain’t but a one thing, baby
To make your baby drink
When I hear you say you don’t love me
And then I began to think
’Cause I’m so wild about you, baby
And I wonder do you ever think of me?
Mmm, now
You know I cry about you, baby
But you don’t care a nothin’ in this world for me now
Ooh, baby
Ooh, baby
Oh, I go crazy about you, baby
And I wonder do you ever think of me?
Mmm, now
You know I’m just wild about you, baby
But you don’t care a nothin’ in this world for me now
I’m so wild about you, baby
Can’t sleep at night
— Sonny Boy Williamson

Many African- American singers have straddled the tension between the churches they belonged to and the secular dynamics in which they existed. Each realm poured back and forth into one another, offering unique rewards and challenges. Ms. Peebles operated in Memphis at the legendary Hi Records with producer Willie Mitchell and his crack band. “Crazy About You Baby” is a repository of perfected sonic ingredients with her steely vocals steering the ship. She turned 77 yesterday and is retired from the biz.

Andre Breton

“All my life, my heart has yearned for a thing I cannot name.”
— Andre Breton
