R. Crumb’s multidimensionality includes musical studies and performance. HisCheap Suit Serenaders revived string band and novelty songs from the early 1900s. Fine Artiste Blues is their original composition and captures the band leader’s irreverent sense of humor. I was fortunate to have caught one of their lively performances at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley in 1982. Their songs are etched in my brain like the grooves in their LP that I lost years ago.
