Herbie Hancock

herbie hancock, “maiden voyage,”

from: Maiden voyage, 1965

One of the wondrous gifts of music is the opportunity it affords us to pin our own hopes, dreams, opinions, and questions upon it. What we make of what is made is part of the unending web of art making. We may find out a given performers thoughts about their creations, but our alternate experience of their work has a life and integrity of its own that we can use as we see fit. I knew the melodic line of “Maiden Voyage,” but I didn’t know its title or its author. In trying to find it, my first guess was accurate, so I’m glad to bring it to you. In it, I feel the presence of stability and endurance and confidence from people who know and understand what they’re doing but it’s their maiden voyage.
