The Bop Shop 8.1.23 - Buffalo Springfield

buffalo springfield, “pretty girl why,”

from: Last time around, 1968

Like the ghost of someone near
She comes to haunt me in my sleep
Still I’m able to sincerely
Get her heart away from his
Pretty Girl why?
Pretty girl why not love me?
Pretty girl why?
Pretty girl why?
There she leaves me twice as lonely
As I was but yesterday
Keeping such a hold upon my thoughts
So near yet far away
Pretty Girl why?
Pretty girl why not love me?
Pretty girl why?
Pretty girl why?
The minstrel boy has gone to war
Now burdened with his father’s sword
Still she doesn’t see how she can give him
Piece of lips to hold
Pretty Girl why?
Pretty girl why not love me?
Pretty girl why?
Pretty girl why?
— Stephen Stills

We drive deeper into the catalogue of the band that was named after a pioneering roadwork equipment company: Buffalo Springfield. A bit of a sonic experiment with singer Stephen Stills employing the well oiled trick of dual tracks of him singing with himself. It’s hypnotic, jazz-rock, shaba shaba meditative music with just the proper tincture of reverb. Snare drum miked up unashamedly. A well constructed bridge. Such a shame that these buggers only lasted with one another for 18 months. As the smoke from the time clears, their talents still soar aloft.
