keef hartley, “too much thinking”

from: halfbreed, 1969

The Keef Hartley Band performed at Woodstock in 1969. In late 1968 they recorded and in 1969 released their classic first album, Halfbreed. Keef had been in John Mayall’s band previously. Bassist Gary Thain, organist Peter Dines and former member Owen Finnegan wrote Too Much Thinking.

Too Much Thinking
There’s nothing wrong with my life
not a damn thing
But I keep reflecting in my mind
Keep imagining
such strange things drifting
Through my head
I’m told I’m alive
But I feel just just like I’m dead
Everybody’s crazy
I would be too if I weren’t so lazy
I wonder when
everything is gonna stop
Stop being hazy
Too much thinking o know
If I don’t stop
I’m gonna stop thinking
ohoho... know
I know I gotta stop myself
I just gotta stop myself
ooh no... I just can’t take it

I’m trying to find myself
but I don’t know where to look
you can’t find yourself
by looking in any book
But strange things drifting
Right through my head
I’m told I’m alive
But I feel I feel just like I’m dead
Everybody’s crazy
I would be too if I weren’t so lazy
Yes I wonder why everything needs to be so hazy
Too much thinking
You know if I don’t stop
I gonna stop thinking
woow. Guess I gotta stop myself
yes I know I better stop myself
no... no. no... no I just can’t take

The video of the song from Halfbreed features Miller Anderson on vocals and guitar and Henry Lowther on violin. The “live” version features Miller on vocals and guitar, Lowther of trumpet and Barbara Thompson on tenor sax. Both are great examples of the blues/rock/jazz that the band featured.
